An Evening With Mary Weiss at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame April 18!

An Evening with Mary Weiss at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Apr 18, 2007 4th Floor Theater, 7 p.m.

Mary Weiss was fourteen when she first hit the charts with "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" as the lead singer of The Shangri-Las. "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" was quickly followed with iconic chartbusters including "Leader of the Pack," "Out in the Streets," "Give Us Your Blessings" and many more. Weiss and The Shangri-Las conveyed an ideal and attitude through their delivery and defiant image which was unheard of at a time when female stars came on either as glamorous young debs or perky teenagers. The group signed to Mercury Records in 1967 and soon fell apart. Weiss was barely eighteen when her last record was released and a number of legal and business entanglements would prevent her from performing and recording for years to come. The evocative voice and appearance of Mary and The Shangri-Las have influenced succeeding generations of female rockers from Deborah Harry to Joan Jett to the Donnas.
